Congratulations as NUJ marks 70 Years!
My President,
On this momentous occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to you, the National Executive Council, and every member of the Union. This milestone demonstrates the enduring strength, resilience, and commitment of the NUJ in upholding the ideals of press freedom, professionalism, and social responsibility.
Since its founding in 1955, the NUJ has been at the forefront of defending the rights of journalists, advocating for press freedom, and advancing the welfare of media professionals across Nigeria. Despite facing numerous challenges — from political repression to economic hardships — the Union has remained steadfast in its mission to improve the working conditions of journalists and maintain the highest standards of ethical journalism.
As a past president who had the privilege of leading the Union for six years, I am immensely proud of the growth and progress the NUJ has achieved. It is my hope that under your leadership, the Union will continue to build on the achievements of those who came before us, confronting new challenges while safeguarding the core values that make the NUJ a respected institution within Nigeria’s media landscape.
The NUJ has consistently played a pivotal role in shaping public discourse, advocating for justice, and ensuring the protection of journalists even in the most challenging circumstances. It is truly inspiring to see how the Union has evolved, especially with a dynamic leadership at the helm, pushing for the welfare and empowerment of our colleagues.
As we celebrate this remarkable anniversary, I take this moment to reflect on the significant strides the Union has made, not just within Nigeria, but also in the international community. We remain optimistic that under your leadership, the Union’s legacy will not only be preserved but strengthened.
I look forward to witnessing the continued success of the NUJ as it enters its next chapter, and I remain committed to supporting the Union in any way I can. May the next 70 years bring even greater accomplishments and growth to our beloved Union.
