Radio Nigeria Pyramid FM Kano will partner with Maryam Abacha American University to strengthen journalism practice and curb the spread of fake news in the state and beyond.
The General Manager of the station, Dr. Garba Ubale Danbatta, disclosed this during a working visit to the university in Kano.
He noted that the media industry is facing serious challenges, particularly with the advent of social media where “everyone has become a journalist without the necessary professional training.”
“I hope the university can create opportunities for practicing journalists to undergo special training, and issue them certificates of attendance. This, I believe, will go a long way in producing more professionals and reducing the menace of fake news,”Dr. Danbatta said.
According to him, Pyramid FM is ready to collaborate with the university in all areas that will address the challenges facing journalism in Nigeria.
Dr. Danbatta also commended the President and Proprietor of Maryam Abacha American University ( MAAUN), Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, for his contributions to education and humanitarian services across Kano, Nigeria and Africa at large.
“Prof Gwarzo truly deserves commendation. Wealthy individuals in Kano should emulate him by establishing schools that will help in raising an educated society and contribute to community development,” he added.
He assured that Pyramid FM would continue to support the university with publicity and other services whenever needed.
On his part, the President of the university, Prof Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, represented by Prof Ibrahim Maigari, expressed appreciation to the management of Pyramid FM for the visit, saying the institution is open to collaboration.
He said tackling challenges in the media sector would help solve a large percentage of Nigeria’s problems.
“I assure you that our doors are always open for collaboration and advice to improve our services, particularly in our Department of Mass Communication,” Prof Gwarzo said.
He pledged that Maryam Abacha American University will work hand in hand with Pyramid FM to promote effective journalism and quality media practice in Kano.
