Safe Motherhood Day: Kano Maternal Mortarlity Rate Reduced By 1,025 Per 100.000 Live Birth To 378 – Dr Labaran
Kano state government has reiterated its commitment to tackle the challenges affecting pregnant women across the state.
The state commissioner for health Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf stated this during a press briefing on the commemoration of 2026 world Safe Motherhood in Kano.
He said Safety of mothers during pregnancy, childbirth and thereafter remains a top priority for this administration because it is not just a health issue, but a fundamental human right that every woman deserves access to quality care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.
Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf also said this year’s theme is apt: “Closing the Gap: “From Coverage to Quality Care for Every Mother,” while Slogan is: “Care That Saves. Systems That Deliver,” focusing on high quality, equitable and life-saving services.
“It also underscores the need for a strong and responsive health system that works efficiently for every mother and newborn, regardless of location or socioeconomic status,” He said.
According to the commissioner, Kano State Government under the able leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf have taken deliberate steps to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes which includes but not limited to: • Strengthening emergency obstetric and newborn care services across our health facilities;• Expanding access to antenatal, delivery, and postnatal services;• Improving availability of essential commodities and life-saving equipment;• Capacity building of healthcare workers to deliver quality care; and • Enhancing maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response systems.With these laudable achievements, I am happy to inform you that Maternal Mortality for Kano State have drastically reduced 1,025 per 100,000 live births to 378/100,000 Live births (The NDHS, 2024).’
“Despite these efforts, we acknowledge areas of improvement such as quality of care, access to services, and reducing delays in seeking and receiving care. we reaffirm our commitment to:• Ensure that no woman dies while giving life;• Improve quality of care across all levels of the health system;• Strengthen community engagement and demand for skilled care; and • Work collaboratively with partners, traditional leaders, and communities for the health and wellbeing of our teeming populace. The commissioner added
Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf called on all stakeholders, health workers, partners, community leaders, philanthropists and families to sustain and strengthen our existing collaboration in achieving safe motherhood for all.
