The Kano State Ministry of Education has announced that the number of out-of-school children in the state has dropped by 11.5%.
From 989,234 in 2023 to 875,593 in the 2026 survey.
This means 113,641 children have returned to school within three years.
The disclosure was made by the Kano State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, while presenting the 2026 Out-of-School Children Survey Report at the COVID-19 Hall of the Ministry of Education in Kano.
The Commissioner said the reduction was due to measures being taken to improve education across the state. He added that the 2026 figures were based on a comprehensive survey conducted across all 44 Local Government Areas of the state, with data broken down by age and gender. He said this data will help in policy formulation, resource allocation, and implementing education programs that meet community needs.
However, he stressed that there is still a major challenge, as 875,593 children are still out of school, an issue that requires more effort from the government and other stakeholders.
He also stated that the partnership between Kano State Government, UNICEF and other organizations continues to play a key role in fighting the problem of out-of-school children’s.
