The Kano State Government has trained Journalists on Emergency Risk Communication, organised through State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) with support from the FCDO–Lafiya Programme.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf while declaring the workshop open in kaduna urged the participants to use what they learned to the development of health coverage in the state.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinforced the administration’s commitment to proactive health governance by enhancing the capacity of journalists, broadcasters and digital media practitioners to deliver accurate, ethical and coordinated information during disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.

In a statement signed by public relations officer KNCDC Muhammad Dayyabu Ali said the governor represented by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, the Governor reaffirmed that responsible media engagement is central to safeguarding lives. He stressed that misinformation and unverified reporting pose serious risks during emergencies, and called for sustained collaboration between the media, the Ministry of Health and KNCDC to ensure timely, credible and people-centred communication.

The initiative was driven by the strategic leadership of the Director General of KNCDC, Professor Muhammad Adamu Abbas, whose focus on preparedness, infodemic management and coordinated messaging continues to strengthen Kano State’s emergency response framework across all 44 local government areas.

The workshop concluded with practical sessions on outbreak reporting, misinformation management, social media engagement and the development of Kano State’s Media Emergency Communication Action Plan, further consolidating the state’s readiness to respond effectively to public health threats.

This milestone underscores the Kano State Government’s resolve to build strong institutions, empower strategic partners and protect the health and wellbeing of its citizens through effective public communication.
