Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, said the essence of the commemoration is to promote prevention and early detection of diseases. He noted that the global theme, “Close the Gap,” aligns with the vision of the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which is anchored on inclusiveness and ensuring that no one is left behind.
Dr. Yusuf revealed that in the last year, the state government successfully treated several cancer patients and has continued to record achievements in the health sector.
According to him, some of these achievements include free diabetes screening and other public health interventions aimed at improving the wellbeing of residents.
While speaking on the SARMAAN II programme, the commissioner explained that the initiative is designed to support children by providing essential medicines to prevent common and preventable diseases. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to eliminating preventable diseases across the state.
The commissioner further disclosed that the last Sunday of every January is set aside to raise awareness on neglected diseases such as leprosy, cancer and lymphatic filariasis. The explained that these diseases have devastating effects on humanity if not properly addressed.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf stated that in the previous year, Kano State successfully treated about 319 people affected by leprosy. On cancer control efforts, he emphasized the need for early detection and sustained public enlightenment.
On SARMAAN II, commissioner said the programme will ensure the availability of essential drugs for children and called on parents and guardians to bring their children out to benefit from the initiative.
