National House of Representatives Committee on has assured its readiness to support Kano state government in the health sector.
The committee chairman Emos Gwamna Magaji announced this during an oversight visit to some healthcare facilities in Kano.
He said, their coming to Kano is part of effort of national assembly through the committee on health to oversight the basic healthcare provision fund and other government agency in the health sector.
“Basically we came to Kano for three reasons: firstly the madate of the legislature to make law. Secondly to appropriate funds running of government and lastly to oversight those funds to see utilization,” Emos Gwamna said.
According to the house of representatives chairman on health what make the oversight all over the country is because is there is need of national assembly to intervene in the health sector because some of the donor agencies that use to fund for many projects have withdrawn.
“We are also not being doing well in our health indicators, Nigeria is the highest in maternal mortality rate, so many children died as a result of hunger. So we decided that base on basic healthcare provision fund to tackle all those changes,” Emos Gwamna Magaji added.
Emos Gwamna Magaji further said the federal government given directive to many states to strengthening the basic healthcare insurance, that’s why the committee visited Kano state to see what the state doing so far as regard to basic healthcare provision fund.
“Among the places we are visit is Giginyu primary healthcare center. We are highly appropriate with the level of renovation, the facility is very clean the workers are zealous. Base on this we’re calling Kano state government to add more personnel.” Emos Gwamna Magaji emphasized.
Earlier speaking, Kano state Commissioner for health Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf expressed his happiness with the oversight visit, described it as collaboration visit in trying to improve health sector in Kano and the Nigeria at a whole.
“We have discussed essentially on how much they have brought to Kano, what have intended to do and how they intend to make health sector better. Am sure with this visit the health sector in this country will improve better,” Dr Abubakar Labaran added.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf highlighted the Kano state government commitment in making healthcare affordable and accessible to all citizens.
He emphasized that the state government has invested in upgrading Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) centres, accreditation of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) to higher levels of care, and rolling out several community-focused interventions under ABBACare.
The Committee further praised the government’s proactive measures in mobilizing resources, expanding health insurance coverage, and ensuring that vulnerable groups, including women, children, and sickle cell patients, receive adequate medical attention.
During the visit, the state ministry for health submitted the Kano state situation Report on health sector to the chairman House of Representatives committee on health Emos Gwamna Magaji.
