July 28th, marks World Hepatitis Day, a global event set aside by the United Nations to raise awareness about hepatitis and its impact on communities.
Commemorating the day, Kano state Commissioner for Health Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, has reaffirmed the state government commitment to combating hepatitis, describing Kano as the first state in Nigeria to provide free medical treatment for people living with the disease.
Commemorating the day Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf pointed out that Kano state government last year earmarked over 90 million naira for the purchase of hepatitis screening machines.
According to the commissioner this is part of efforts to ensure Kano becomes hepatitis-free.
“Over two million people in Kano State are currently affected by hepatitis, stressed that the disease is preventable.” Dr. Labaran added.
In a statement signed by Public relations officer state ministry for health Nabilisi Abubakar Kofar Na’isa the commissioner also urged citizens to avoid direct contact with infected persons and to always practice safe health habits.
He also emphasized the importance of medical screening, especially for pregnant women, noting that early detection is key to treatment and prevention.
The Commissioner called on members of the public to regularly visit health facilities for screening and proper medical advice.
This year’s World Hepatitis Day is being observed with the theme: “Let’s Break the Silence”, highlighting the need for public awareness and collective action to eliminate the disease.
