Kano State Launches CNG and EV Northern Corridor Transport Initiative

The Kano State Government has launched a fleet of newly introduced transport vehicles under the CNG and EV Launch Northern Corridor Programme (Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles), an initiative aimed at promoting cleaner and more sustainable transportation across Northern Nigeria.

The programme includes buses, tricycles, and motorcycles powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric technology, designed to improve mobility while reducing dependence on conventional fuel sources.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who led the official launch ceremony, stated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to support the Federal Government’s policy of expanding the use of alternative and clean energy solutions in the transportation sector.

The governor stated that the Kano State Government remains committed to providing an efficient transport system that will not only ease movement for residents but also reduce transportation costs and support environmental sustainability.

He explained that the introduction of CNG and electric vehicles would significantly reduce harmful emissions associated with pollution and climate-related challenges, which continue to impact public health and the environment.

Speaking at the event, the National CNG Programme Coordinator, Barrister Isma’il Ahmad, described the CNG and EV Northern Corridor Launch as one of the Federal Government’s key interventions aimed at transforming transportation and making it more affordable and environmentally friendly.

He noted that the programme is expected to lower transport operating costs compared to petrol and diesel-powered vehicles while creating economic opportunities for drivers, technicians, and other stakeholders in the transport sector.

Kano State government House correspondent Adamu Dabo said the newly launched vehicles are expected to begin operations in the near future, offering residents access to a cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable transportation system in Kano State.
