The Chairman of the Kano State Hockey Association and Northwest representative on the Nigeria Hockey Federation, Ibrahim Sani Ungoggo, popularly known as Dangata Hockey, has reaffirmed the association’s commitment to reviving hockey in the state through grassroots development in schools and local communities.
Ungoggo said the association is working closely with the Kano State Government, educational institutions, and other stakeholders to restore the sport’s popularity and create opportunities for young people.
According to him, the association has already partnered with Kano State University and has also received encouragement and support from Northwest University as part of efforts to reintroduce hockey and strengthen its development across the state.
He appealed to the Kano State Government to construct additional hockey pitches in strategic locations and rehabilitate the existing hockey pitch at Mahaha to enable more young athletes to develop and showcase their talents.
“We need the Kano State Government to support us, particularly by providing modern facilities and equipment. The rehabilitation of the Mahaha hockey pitch is also critical to the development of the sport in the state,” Dangatan Hockey said.
He noted that investing in modern hockey facilities and equipment would not only promote the sport but also provide meaningful engagement for youths, helping to keep them away from crime and other social vices while nurturing future sporting talents.
He also expressed optimism that with sustained government support and collaboration with educational institutions, hockey would once again thrive in Kano State and contribute to youth development and sporting excellence.
According to Ibrahim, popularly known as Dangata Hockey, said the association has adopted a new initiative tagged “Hockey First: Hockey is the Number One Sport in Kano” as part of its strategy to revive and promote the game across the state.
