The Kano State Government has announced a raft of restrictions on this year’s Eid-el-Fitr Durbar, citing intelligence reports of planned disruptions that could threaten public order.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the measures followed deliberations by the State Security Council, which uncovered “deliberate attempts by some individuals to create confusion and instigate a breakdown of law and order” during the Sallah celebrations.
While reaffirming its commitment to preserving Kano’s cultural heritage, the government stressed that it would not compromise on its constitutional duty to ensure peace and safeguard lives and property.
After consultations with the Kano Emirate Council and other stakeholders, the government approved a scaled-down programme for the traditional Durbar festivities.
According to the directive, the Hawan Idi procession will be led by the Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, from the Kofar Mata Eid praying ground through designated routes to Gidan Shettima, ending at Kofar Fatalwa within the Emir’s Palace.
The Hawan Nasarawa event will hold in a modified format, but without horse riding, while Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau, and Hawan Dorayi have been suspended until subsequent Sallah celebrations.
Authorities said security agencies had been instructed to heighten surveillance and enforce strict compliance with the new guidelines. They are also mandated to take lawful measures against any attempt to breach the peace before, during, or after the festivities.
The government urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security personnel, warning against the spread of unverified information.
It also commended security agencies for their professionalism and reiterated its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and hitch-free celebration.
The statement concluded with Sallah goodwill, wishing Muslims across the state a safe and joyous Eid-el-Fitr.
