Kano State Government, in collaboration with the National TB and Leprosy Control Program and partners, commemorated the 2025 World TB Day with a press briefing at the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, emphasized the state’s resolve to end TB by 2030.
The commissioner highlighted the alarming statistics: Nigeria ranks 6th among the 30 high TB burden countries globally, and Kano, being the most populous state, is one of the six high TB burden states.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran pointed out that, Kano recorded 33,690 TB cases, with 28,169 patients (83%) receiving treatment – the highest notification rate by any state in Nigeria.
Additionally, 1,731 children were placed on treatment.
The commissioner stressed the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, urging the public to visit the nearest health facility for free TB diagnosis and treatment.
The commissioner further appreciated the support of the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the contributions of traditional institutions, religious leaders, philanthropists, and development partners.
Dr. Labaran noted that Among the machineries out in place to avert the menace of TB includes Maintenance of 1,391 health facilities (DOTS sites) and over 300 TB diagnosis laboratorie, Provision of TB services in tertiary institutions, correctional facilities, and other settings, stronger collaboration with professional bodies, civil society, and community-based organizations and Increased awareness and public education on TB prevention and control.
