Kano State government has urged residents to prioritize regular health checks and adopt healthier lifestyles as part of efforts to curb the rising burden of diabetes in the state.
The state commissioner for health Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf stated this during a press briefing held to commemorate the 2025 World Diabetes Day.
Dr. Yusuf said the annual event serves as a reminder of the growing threat posed by diabetes and the need for continuous public education on its prevention and management.
He stressed that diabetes affects people of all ages and requires early detection through routine screening.
The Commissioner noted that the Kano State Government, in its commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery, has expanded the number of diabetes care centres across the state from 52 to 310 to enhance access to screening and treatment services.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf pointed out that community awareness campaigns have been intensified, while strategic partnerships are being established to develop a more resilient and responsive health system.
Dr. Yusuf described diabetes as one of the leading non-communicable diseases globally, emphasizing the importance of physical activity, regular exercise, and healthy living.
He warned that unmanaged diabetes can lead to complications affecting the eyes, lungs, and heart, and in severe cases, may result in limb amputation.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s determination to continue improving healthcare services to ensure better outcomes for people living with diabetes in Kano State.
