The Borno State branch of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has commended Governor Babagana Umar Zulum for his commitment to improving the welfare of frontline health workers in the state.

Speaking at a press briefing in Maiduguri, the Chairman of NANNM, Comrade Muhammad Yaro, who was represented by his deputy, Comrade Sa’idu H. Gwalan, praised the state government for its recent interventions aimed at strengthening the healthcare sector.

He described the implementation of a new salary structure for nurses and midwives as a “remarkable step” that will serve as a foundation for growth in the profession. “Despite the numerous challenges facing the healthcare sector, we are beginning to see positive changes, especially with the government’s new initiatives,” Gwalan stated.

The association noted that during a recent meeting with the Governor, key issues such as shortage of staff, inadequate salaries, and lack of essential medical materials were presented. According to Gwalan, the Governor assured the union that steps would be taken to address these challenges.

He further urged the government to prioritize the recruitment of more healthcare personnel, stressing that shortage of staff remains one of the biggest obstacles to an effective healthcare system in Borno State.

Gwalan also expressed optimism that the state government would soon tackle the problem of brain drain, where health workers leave for better opportunities in other states or countries.

While praising Governor Zulum for his consistent support, he called on all health workers in Borno to remain committed to their duties, assuring them that their sacrifices were being recognized and rewarded.
